INSTM, the National Interuniversity Consortium of Materials Science and Technology, is the largest consortium of its kind in Italy, drawing on the expertise of no less than 53 universities – and all those that are active in Italy in researching advanced materials and technologies.
INSTM is an original bottom-up aggregation of researchers, which efficiently coordinates the activities, promotes the joint participation of INSTM groups to Italian and European projects, is active in technology transfer, also establishing spin-off enterprises, takes care of the training aspects in Materials Science and Technology. INSTM promotes the research activities of its members through organizational, technical, and financial support. About 3000 professors, researchers, post-docs, and PhD students are associated to INSTM and the number thereof is continuously increasing.
The scientific structure of INSTM is organized in Thematic Sections, which is the tool to coordinate the scientific activities, plus ad hoc committee on Scientific and technological computation. Currently the Thematic Sections are five:
- Materials and technologies for Made in Italy, advanced manufacturing, and aerospace
- Materials and technologies for ecological transition: energy and sustainable mobility
- Materials and technologies for the green economy and circular economy
- Materials and technologies for buildings and cultural heritage
- Materials and technologies for life and food sciences
